About Us

Douglass Family Dentistry was started by James D. Douglass Sr, DDS (1904-1988) who practiced dentistry for 50 years at Person Street in Fayetteville, NC.  James D. Douglass Sr. was among the first black dentists in Fayetteville and a respected community leader.  In 1985, our legacy practice was handed down to James D Douglass Jr and now to James D Douglass III.  Joining our practice since 2012 is Fayetteville native, Naomi Kerr, DDS

James D. Douglass Jr, DDS & Bernice Hodges Douglass

In 1985,  Dr. James Douglass Jr. and his wife of 60 years, Bernice Hodges Douglass, moved to Fayetteville where he would assume his father's position as head of the dentistry established on Moore Street. From there, he would carry on the family tradition of serving the community with affordable and quality dentistry until his retirement. 


January 31, 2022, Dr. James Davis Douglass Jr., husband, father and provider of dental care and services to the city of Fayetteville passed away at the age of 80. He is survived not only by his decade's long legacy of academic achievement, professionalism and service to the community, but also by his wonderful wife of 60 years Bernice Douglass, their six children, nine grandchildren, and many friends and golfers.

  • DR. JAMES D DOUGLASS III, DDS

    Dr. James D. Douglass III is the son of Dr. James D. Douglass Jr. Continuing with his family's history of dental care in Fayetteville, Dr. Douglass III joined Douglass Family Dentistry after the office was moved to 101 Wall St in 2000.  After attending Hampton and Howard Universities, he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1994-2000.  During his time in the service he practiced as a dentist in Paris Island, South Carolina and Okinawa, Japan.  

  • DR. NAOMI KERR, DDS

    Dr Kerr joined the Douglass Dentistry family in January 2012.  She graduated from Howard University in 1986 and after interning at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, she returned to Howard University for the next 11 years as professor of Endodontics.  Since 2004 she has been in private practice.

  • Joy Douglass-Slankard

    Joy D Douglass-Slankard graduated from Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She entered North Carolina Central University where she graduated with a major in art. After which she recieved her Associates Degree in Dental Lab Technology from Durham Technical Community College
