Tooth Colored Fillings
Our office will use either amalgam or composite (tooth-colored) fillings.  Old silver fillings can be replaced with composite fillings.

Crowns
A crown is type of dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a tooth or implant.  If you have a large amount of decay (cavity), (or when more than half your tooth is gone), sometimes it is better to have a crown.  Dental fillings, especially large ones, often have a weakening effect on teeth.  The materials that are available for fillings are not going to be as strong as your original tooth.  Crowns are made of metal and porcelain.  These materials are very strong so you don’t have to worry about them breaking.

Root Canal Treatment
Our office performs root canal treatment on anterior (front) teeth and bicuspids.

What is a root canal treatment? A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

"Root canal" is the term used to describe the natural cavity within the center of the tooth. The pulp or pulp chamber is the soft area within the root canal. The tooth's nerve lies within the root canal.

A tooth's nerve is not vitally important to a tooth's health and function after the tooth has emerged through the gums. Its only function is sensory -- to provide the sensation of hot or cold. The presence or absence of a nerve will not affect the day-to-day functioning of the tooth.

Treatment of Gum Disease
The earliest stage of gum disease(gingivitis) is often characterized by bleeding, tenderness, swelling and redness of gums.  A toothpaste or mouth rinse may be used to help reduce bleeding and inflammation for mild gingivitis.

A more advanced stage of gum disease (periodontitus) involves bone and ligament surrounding the teeth.  If left untreated, it can damage the bone and the supporting tissues. Your gum separates from the tooth and the bone level deteriorates.

Advanced periodontitis includes major loss of bone support.  Your gums recede farther and separate.  Pus may develop, bone loss continues and your teeth may loosen or fall out.

Treatment will depend upon the type of disease and how far the condition has progressed. One type of periodontitis can only be treated and not cured. Treatment options include:

Scaling removes deposits above and below the gumline.

Root Planning smoothes rough root surfaces so the gum can heal. Local anesthesia may be used.

Oral Irrigation directs liquid below the gumline to flush out toxins and germs to help restore the gums to health.

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.  Mainly caused by plaque bacteria, it is usually painless in the early stages.  Regular dental visits are essential to maintaining gum health and timely diagnosis and treatment when needed.

Bridges
A bridge is a dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by joining permanently to adjacent teeth or implants.

Partials and Dentures
These are removable replacements of a natural tooth or teeth. Replacement options may include a partial for one or more teeth or all of your teeth may be replaced with a denture.  Douglass Dentistry offers several different types of partials and dentures.  We will be happy to discuss you what will be best for you.

Our Doctors are equipped to perform extractions of all 32 teeth.  If a specialist is needed, we will be happy to provide a referral to an oral surgeon.
